What Is Christian Science?

Home / What Is Christian Science?

Christian Science is based on the teachings and healing of Christ Jesus. It was discovered and founded by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866. Christian Science teaches us that an understanding of God’s omnipotence and omnipresence can give us dominion over fear, evil, and hatred— and how this heals us, protects us, and allows us to live our lives more peacefully and fully.

Mary Baker Eddy

Mary Baker Eddy (1821-1910) devoted more than four decades to communicating a message of hope, healing, comfort, and spiritual strength to the world. A remarkable woman clearly ahead of her time, she challenged nineteenth century mainstream beliefs about the nature of man’s existence and the power of prayer to heal. She healed, taught, preached, lectured, mentored, and published 17 books. Nominated to the National Women’s Hall of Fame, her accomplishments include launching a newspaper— The Christian Science Monitor— and discovering and founding a system of spiritual healing— Christian Science. Her greatest contribution was writing Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures and making it available to everyone.
